I like the idea of having Ten Commandments. In theory it would make things simple but reality always has a way of sneaking in there lol. It should but called the fourty commandments (choose those that apply depending on your current situation). But that makes for a shaky foundation in a religion. The point is I've found in order to grow CP's I've had to carefully research ea type separately and ea type has its own set of rules. Like the fertilizer rule for example is more of a guide line and not a rule at all. The greatest purchace I've made in this hobby isn't even a plant. I bought "the savage garden" and I refer to it on a regular basis to help point me in the right direction depending on the goals I need to achieve for that specific plant. Then once the needs of the plant are learned some get compromised based on the growers setup and or global location. Don't get me wrong CP's are not difficult, you guys are proof that they can be grown anywhere. These plants are not ordinary either, they deserve that "extraordinary" label and all that comes with it. My .02

Nope someone got guidelines for plants then CPs come along and changes all the rules lol!! Kinda like nature in reverse instead of insects eating plants, these seemed to have learned the rules and used it against these insects! they lie and wait and lure their food to them.

What I can't figure is how I grow some plants for years and they do great and then for no obvious reasons under apparently the same conditions, they dwindle or die. Am I cursed?

For years I couldn't even grow U. gibba for more than a few months. Then I gave up and threw it in the bottom of the terrarium and now it's probably the best U. gibba culture in the world. It just shows that every plant has its "perfect" conditions and if you hit it by accident or design, they will grow like crazy.

+1 Lloyd. Some of these plants require things we don't have access to, or may not realize. There is a nep that gets most of its nutrients from shrew poo. I can't remember the name of it. It lures the shrew to it with a very sweet nectar. the shrew climbs over the pitcher to lick the lid and the nectar is a very fast acting laxative. The shrew then deficates into the pitcher thus feeding the nep. I know we always find other ways to feed our plants, but this is just one example of something a plant needs that the tag jammed in the medium won't tell you when you buy it. Sometimes trial and error is the best way to figure out how to make your plant happy.

some of my VFT seedlings are dying off for no apparent reason the one with the fully developed trap is doing the best but the rest seem to be dying off....no changes not even moving the pot they are in

Difficult to diagnose without more detail, such as temperature, light, water level and type, any mould etc. A picture would probably be more advantageous.
Cheers Steve

Cheers Steve the water is tray method 2 times a week filling with distilled water everything else is the same as when all appeared to be healthy one plant even opened a trap! I noticed all those dying was touching the peat then shriveled and died 1 plant it doing better than the rest and has a fully developed trap opened but only seed sized so far my card reader is not working right now but I will try to post a pic later oh almost forgot one trap was hunched over for a few weeks then touched the media surface and met the same fate as the others If I get these out of the soil with a toothpick ,think I can plant the roots or save some of them?

Sounds like they have might have root rot. Are they kept constantly wet, and is the medium free-draining? I find my VFTs like it moist but not soaked all the time. I let them dry out a bit between waterings and keep them in deep pots.

I dunno if I did anything all conditions including watering method and amount never changed,I used the same conditions to germinate them. its not root rot because 1 is doing really well even had a fully developed trap opened(seed size)but I was thinking like you and dug up the worst one and the roots were only 1/4 inch long! and were black. my media sticks to my finger touching it but feels damp, not wet just damp and are getting 12 hours of light a day and are so warm I had to leave the room! I have aquarium gravel added for aeration and only water 2 or 3 times a week just adding water to the tray sorry I cannot post a pic as my card reader does not work. if I did not know better I would blame the media cause they droop and touch ground then die! they are in 5 inch deep pots.....could that be the problem??
