I have to totally enclose my bog due to birds getting at the pitcher plants and yanking out all of my moss for nesting materials (along with my drosera).
EQL: I just stick them in the growing media. VFT's seem to bud readily, at least for me.

I've got to think up some sort of enclosure for next year. The squirrels are going crazy for my tomatoes, I don't think I'll get any more this year. I can imagine the havoc they would do to any CP's.

I read in the paper that mint is supposed to really annoy raccoons and any rodents like mice, rats, and squirrels and chipmunks. I just tried some in my tomatoes which the squirrels are eating like crazy. We live on a ravine with 2 million squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, birds, skunks and everything else you can think of. I'll let you know if it helps. I used some to keep a chipmunk from digging out my steps and it seems to have worked so far.

So much for mint, I put about $10 of mint all over the tomatoes, minimal help if any.

As for "when to restock", doesn't realy matter- tho personally I'd just wait and get a nice plant in full growth in the spring so as to not have to worry about dormancy with them- just a suggestion!!
Cayenne pepper is a PITA to actually keep up with, too, I tried it one eyar to keep cats out and it was more hassle than it was worth

I guess I should have specified that I gave my boyfriends dad a VFT and thats what the tree rats got hehe. the bulbs might not be totally lost, make sure you don't keep them sopping before they grow. as for replace now or later, if you have an indoor growing area, replace now, if not then wait till spring. I have a general rule of thumb that I will not aquire anything to grow out side past middle of august if it isn't already growing in cycle. I've had too many times where the new plants often sarrs got neuked because when the first frost came they weren't hardened yet. Sib

not to rub it in, but these horror stories make me thankfull for the farm. We're too far away from the forest and surrounded on all sides by feilds to have to worry about tree rats. birds are taken care of by cats, and have yet to encounter coons and skunks, although I know they're arround, possums too. not sure what I'll do if they become a problem. EQL: I have a bunch in plain ol' peat moss that are quite happy and very colourful, but I have been putting new additions in a peat/sand mix and they're doing okay as well.

RICK, can you please show me pics and brand name and the place where to get that sand which you are using? I want to quit the perlite thingy. I have to try VFT's in new media.
