I seen a parrot pitcher plant (Sarracenia psittacina) on e-bay and I was curious because the plant looked very different from other sarracenia, but I haven't heard or read anything about this particular sarracenia before on this site. I was curious to find out if anyone else has tried to grow this plant before, so that I can find out if it is worth getting to add to my collection, or if this plant is better to stay away from. Any comment will be useful right now. Thanks

i have a few of them, its a personal preference as you say. its form is quite different then other, not my favourite sarr, i'm more partial to uprights. It is more cold sensative then other sarrs too, it really didnt appreciate not being tucked in last winter. That being said, it has nice colour and lends interesting habbit to its crosses. So i guess the end result is, if you like the way it looks go for it Sib

I love this one myself, it is my favorite sarr. Mine are still quite small, as only having them since last spring, it is only 7 inches in diameter. From memory after reading savage garden (Peter D.), seems he says they like it wet, more so than any other sarr, as they live in locations that are often flooded, and they even capture prey while submerged... A definate must have in a sarr collection, in my opinion.

Where can I get one of these interesting plants? I am a little cautious about buying any seeds from e-bay.

Try any of the good CP businesses, or maybe someone on this forum has some plants and can send you some seeds. There is supposed to be a seed bank on this forum, but check with Syble. I have gotten seeds (not of this species, although they probably have it) from the ICPS seed bank (www.carnivorousplants.org).

Hawaiian Botanicals and Keehns both carry them.

Yeah, sorry. I was thinking seeds only, for some reason. Yes, plants should be easy to find.

Actually, I would rather grow them from seeds because it would be more interesting and rewarding for my son and myself anyway. Getting it as a plant is nice too, don't get me wrong, but when you grow it yourself and you see the little sprout show itself and then it starts to really grow, especially for me whom before my kids started to grow regular flowers and tomatoes on our patio a few years ago I could not grow anything to save my life, so being able to get the very interesting plants to grow for us is really fun.

Do these seeds need to be cold stratified like other sarracenia seeds. Also, I asked the one guy from e-bay when the seeds where harvested and he messaged me back telling me they harvested the seeds in September 2009, so I would think that the seeds should be viable still.

Personally, I try to steer away from e-Bay, or anything like it. You can't always tell who is selling, and if they are legitimate. It's better to go to a known, respectable source, and support the CP hobby at the same time. That's just my opinion.

True, and that really does make sense.

They do need cold stratification unless you use GA3. E-bay has it's good sides for sure, and some not so good sides. I imagine the seed viability would be as good as places like Rare Exotic Seeds or any other seed store (ie: 50/50 chance with CPs). I agree with you, I would much rather grow from seed if given the chance, and have bought good and bad seeds alike. Still worth the price Good luck with them.

Thanks prmills, I think that I am going to give e-bay a chance to redeem itself.
