If it was me doing it, I would get a regular timer to control a lighting contactor, rated for that type of inductive load.
You should still be okay if you can find a timer rated for a 15 amp motor load. 1000 watt metal halides start out drawing 9.0 amps, when operating at 120 volts, but by the time they are fully lit the amperage draw has dropped to about 2/3 of that.

Yeah you need to be careful .I am told, with timers and halides. You may need a controller unit. Find out for sure before you just slap a reg. timer on it!

Thanks guys, i think I'll use a 600V magnetic contactor for motor rated about 12 amps at 125V. I've decided not to do it the lazy way , I'll start back my automation setup. Long story short , I've just bought a house and i did not moved my old setup. Don't worry I've took the electronic with me . I'll start everything back from scratch, enclosure and PLC program. Finally I have a basement!!!

Congrats on your new house Simon, and the basement growspace. Are you using a PLC presently. Getting a PLC and making an automated setup is something I have been mulling over, and eventually something I would like to set up. What PLC are you using? I've heard some people use the Allen Bradley SLC 100, for their automated setups. Or I could look into something from Telemechanique.

Allen bradley PLC are kind of expensive but they are great to work with. I've nerver used telemecanique but i think they are cheap and compact. I've posted some photo of my old setup here. ocps.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photos&action=display&thread=2515 . I use Siemens s7-200, cpu224xp. I suggest to look on ebay, price are great. If you want something really cheap you could look at something like the logo from siemens. No need for a pc to program it but it has less function.

Thanks for the info. I've never bought anything off of eBay, but there is a first time for everything.
