flytrap, i use an adjustable aquarium heater 1 in each bucket sticky I got to check my rainwater one day. I've got a couple of large collectors in the yard, including a gigantic fat rainbarrel - that fills up quickly during one of our many rain storms. My problem with rain is that the water is so very cold, and it's not easy lugging large buckets of water into the home to warm up. The other big headache i have with rainwater is the many dead bugs all covered with fungus ... these critters drowned in the water and I wonder if this diluted bug soup is full of bacteria or full of nutrients for my plants....

I talked to a friend of mine whom is a chemist and she said to use vinegar to lower ph. I tried it on a 2 liter container of water and used a few drops and got a ph drop from 10.3 to 4.1. I'm pretty sure that vinegar wouldn't harm cps in that small quantity but if anyone knows let me know.

I use vinegar to lower pH in my TC in very small quantities and it's not at all toxic. The fact that the pH went so low just indicates the water has a very low buffering capacity. As soon as anything organic is in the water it will be buffered towards neutrality.
