What's the approximate grain size of the stuff people like? On the plants I got from Mabudon the grit size seems to be about 0.8 mm or so on average.

Napa only has a non-silica sand that is of a fine grade, not what we are looking for.

I went to a few places this morning to check out sand. Garden places just had a play looking sand which didn't look too clean. Building places had a "silica" sand (maybe not really silica sand because of cancer risk but it looked clear, clean & inert) but it wasn't as gritty as I wanted, maybe a grain size of 0.3 mm or so. Grittier than the aquarium silica sand but not as gritty as the stuff Mabudon uses (~0.8 mm or so). These places were all in a industrial NW part of Toronto. I'll keep looking.

Try a company that services and sells supplies for swimming pools. You should be able to get the sand that goes into the filters, which should be of sufficient granularity.
I got this stuff called "White Lightning" from Jay, which seems to do the job quite nicely. As I recall, the price was right too. Maybe Jay can let us know where he got it.

I already tried a swimming pool supplier and the sand they have is really fine and powdery. If anybody has any sources in Toronto?

Jay when you say medium grade silica sand, how big is the grain size? I found some in Toronto that's around 1.5 times the size of white sugar.

Anywhere that sells sand blasting sand may have the appropriate stuff. They don't however sell silica sand for sand blasting since I am told its illegal to use. Aquarium stores or building centers may all carry the products. That Target store is 10 min. from my house so I will go check it out tomorrow (I hope) as I need quite a lot for my bog garden.

I got 100lbs of Pool sand which is clean 100% quartz. Its about .8mm dia. grains (.030" for any english ppl). It is a white sand obviously and it cost me $6 a bag (50lbs) Got it at that Target building center that barvinok found. It was the best choice for an inert sand since its completly non-toxic, washed and cheap. So I would suggest any pool store! Unless one of you is gonna tell me that plants are allergic to quartz. Which I can just see that happening with the way my luck goes with this stuff!!! LOL

I'll phone some more pool suppliers then. I also found a Carquest and a sandblasting supply store in the east end of Toronto. I'll do some more checking. If I find some, I'll buy a bag for you Vraev and you can pick it up anytime.
