Hi guys, I am starting the mammoth and the delicate task of unpotting my terrarium and potting the plants in their respective pots. I am taking care to ensure that the EXACT same ingredients are used. I bought the same perlite, I have the same peat. I just bought this along with my nep enclousure. Is this brand of moss safe for neps, flytraps and other CP's?? For flytraps this will only be at the bottom of the pot to prevent media from flowing out of the 6 inch diameter plastic pots that I nbught at walmart. For neps I plan on using 60% of this LFS, 15% perlite and remaining peat moss. right now I am heading out to get 8 liters of distilled water to aid the process of this big change for my plants. cheers, vraev

I have that brand in the basement although I haven't used it yet. It looks safe although someone here mentioned it sort of falls apart.
How much is distilled water at Price Chopper? I think at Canada Tire it's $1.50 or so for 4 litres.

I just bought this 2 bottles... 4L each for 0.99$ . Pretty cheap! It has on its label : dissolved salts: 0 ppm....dissolved chlorine, flourides 0 ppm. So I am guessing its good. If it works out well...this can replace my other source which is farther away. about this falling apart....I don't know what u exactly mean...if its later in time or right from the package....BUT... right in the package, I notice it being very brittle...most of it is like powder already at the bottom.

That's really cheap, I'll buy some at price chopper too.
I think the thing to do is just dump a portion of the moss carefully in the distilled water. Let it soak up the water and then handle it when it's moist and it hopefully won't fall apart.

If you like to try different kinds of moss check out Can Tire and Wal Mart, they are selling a surprising variety of mosses this spring

Be careful of mosses other than sphagnum... because they're toxic to most CPs when used as potting media.
The small mounds of moss tuffs that voluntarily appear on the surface of our media ... are great for looks, and helps mulch down the media - helping prevent weeds etc, but this moss cannot be used entirely to sustain CPs as growing media. I think the only CP that can put up with misc moss are utrics... but even then, I believe utrics still need a real media of peat and sand beneath the top dressing of moss.

I am using this moss only for blocking the 5 drianage holes to prevent the peat media from flowing out of the pot. However, inspite of this, the water that drains is brown in colour which means the peat is still coming through. . Well...I couldn't leave a plant unpotted outside like that...so I ended up potting all plants that way.

I think the brown colour is the tannins like tea not actual particulate matter.

hmm.....I guess it should be acidic and not that bad for CP's as most of them grow directly in sphagnum. You know what.....I feel like making a artificial BOG. peat moss ... top layer of sphagnum live....then have pipes underneath that pass clean pure water through the soil. That should make a real bog.

Vraev: Thanks for the price check. I just bought 4 4L bottles for $0.99 each at the Price Chopper on the way home from work. The local health store was selling it for $3.50 for a 4L container. Now I'll see if my plants do better on it rather than the dehumidifier water.

Yes it's the Compliments brand. There was tons of it in the store but I didn't feel like carrying more than 4 to my car.

lol! interestingly in the local store, the spring water on top is selling LESS than the distilled water. I wonder if anyone here in mississauaga has this "exotic" hobby as well. Who would have guessed, distilled water selling like hotcakes.
