Hello all -
I arrived in the Vancouver suburb of Richmond around noon today to visit Jack and his lovely wife, Jeannie for a fabulous tour of their nursery, "Hawaiian Botanicals". This is my third visit to their garden nursery, and was not disappointed.
I arrived just as the weather was clearing up for one of those rare sunny spring days ... and I could have spent days in their greenhouses poring over all their incredible plants. I think Hawaiian Botanicals is Canada's largest CP nursery... and their selection and collection shows well.
They were expecting me, so I wasted no time in taking out the camera ...didn't even have a chance to take off my rain parka that kept me sweltering in their facilities.
I slowly made my way through their sales area, where gigantic pots of highland nepenthes were displayed for the discerning public - N rajah, N spectabilis, N sibuyanensis, N mikei and on and on. The plants were all eyeing me with their greedy mouths - all agape with nectar drooling as they saw this fat chunk of protein stopping to snap photos of them
In the middle of their sales area was a beautiful pond (lake?!) full of koi and local frogs... and lots of water plants - water hyacinth, water lettuce, and much more. Their nursery also stocks an amazing collection of tropical water lilies and lotus plants. In fact, I was watching one of their friendly staff persons, Robert, repotting some of them. Jack dropped my jaw when he opened the door to show me his "barn" of almost 300 new lotus plants ... most of which had nicely wintered over on his premise.
I literally saw endless benches of VFTs - all sorts of varieties, and benches and tubs of sarracenia in their protected propagating greenhouses. Jack mentioned that Jeannie loves spending hours transplanting and repotting their many hundreds (thousands?) of VFTs.
Looks like a lot of hard work to me .
Again, I'd like to thank Jack, Jeannie and their staff at Hawaiian Botanicals for giving me the opportunity to share images with you all. They're the most friendly and most helpful folks in the CP business... and best of all, they're Canadian (no permits for us Canadians to tangle with)
I'll be back... cuz' with all those CPs... I couldn't believe all that I brought back home with me was a Strelitzia regia (bird of paradise)... d'oh!
David
I'll upload some more photos later... Here's a quick link to their CP website:
