Jay had some huge VFT's growing at his place. I've never seen anything like it. He said that all of the VFT clones will grow big in the right conditions and that the only differences in clones were the colours.

titom B52 and big mouth are fundimentally different particularlly trap size, the 52's are supposed to get traps over 2 inches in length. All my fly traps are out in the bog and haven't had the smoothest year but the 52's are considerably larger then the happier of the other VFT, for sure about 2 times as big. going off of memory, thetraps are well over an inch, probably upwards of inch and a half, but I got them mid year and plunged them straight to the bog... not the nicest thing to do! I had mine top off with 2 inch traps in the very first season I got it. They do considerably well...but one thing is to remember.....They need quite the root space as well. Mine has been set back quite a bit by my 3-4 months in 2-3 inches of media depth. I would say something around 6 or 8 inches of root depth should be given, considering ofcourse that the plant gets that big in the first place.

well....that was the prob with mine. I had only 2 inches - 3 inches of media depth and below that...there was a 1 inch layer of pure perlite. Brad was suggesting that the old water that accumulates down there is toxic to the VFT that is causing it to make shock traps. Whatever it was, it did seem to revert back to normal after I repotted...so I strongly believe in nice root space and a homogenous media.

well...as I said....mine had the problem becos there was a difference in layers for the VFT roots and the accumulation of water + perlite under anaerobic conditions might have caused some magnesium or other mineral leakage into the water....which shocked the plant.

hmmm... well.. mines in a 4" "pot" of 2:1 peat:perlite topdressed with LFS... im not going to repot it, since i just got it, however, it seems to be adapting well... got some new traps forming that look quite good-sized! *EQL*

yeah...ofcourse...you don't need to worry about it for quite a while. If ever something like what happened to mine happens....then you should consider it.

Pure peat can work also. Btw I can't see the need for a 6-8" pot.

I'v noticed the same thing Varun. Seems each lief has its owne (one) root and it goes straight down (well down if it can), no branching. I am going to try 2" white pipe some day cut say 8" lengths fill with VFT medium and stand them upright in a container with water in it. The white will stay cool and the extra lenth with give them a chance to grow down as much as they want. I think the B52 and bigmouth are in the same class as having extra large traps but they are not close to the same plant. The bigmouth have more of a deep blod red trap and grow low and the B52 more of an orange red and reach a little higher. Hears a couple of picks of each, that I think are quite true to the real plant. B52 i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/JeremiahsCPs/73160789.jpgBigmouth xs39.xs.to/pics/05301/bigmouthsm.JPGThese are copied off of the masive vft pick sight. If you haven't been on the humboldt sight you got to have a look it is very handy. www.humboldt.edu/~rrz7001/Dionaea.htmlAnother good one for pinguicula. www.humboldt.edu/~rrz7001/Pinguicula.htmlStephen Boris is that a pick of you? every time I look at it it looks like you are standing in a deep snow hole lighting something in you mouth it cracks me up every time I look at it. Of course if it is you you are you are proly not doing what I am thinking.

wow stephen. Hmm....that is fascinating. hmm....lol....I now want to get big mouth cultivar. lol! yeah...I know many people grow VFT in 6 inch pots...so I am hoping this is fine enough. I cannot do pics for a while, but, my B52 has dense growth. I am guessing that probably the young roots are being suffocated in some rare cases, causing shock traps.
