In my yard, squirrels will dig anywhere there is disturbed earth. Oddly they stay away from certain plants, like my tomatoes. I suspect the smell or plant hairs may deter them. You could try moth balls or chili-flakes.

Squirrels and birds (especially blue jays)... as cute and pretty as they are, if it were legal within city limits, I'd use a pellet gun.

Dang squirrel got me again this morning!!!! Serves me right I guess. Brought all my plants inside. Now I just need to let my racing dog out in the back yard and she'll catch him!!! LOL I figure since she catches birds all the time a squirrel should be easy!!!

Ahh, squirrels delightful little fellows they are eh??
Wait til I post pics of "Fortress Maximus", my fully caged-in bog. Kinda ugly from a distance, but after having EVERYTHING (check my G-list, there's enough Sarrs on there to get the picture) torn completely out of the ground day after day after day, I HAD to build the facility. Hopefully right after July 1st I will have pics of the whole deal for you all
I do believe Jay uses a few mothballs around his yard to great effect, too, but there's way too many critters in our area

Lol I thought I had em beat this time but woke up today and he destroyed all my sarrs. So I bought a portable closet from Zehers food plus and put them in the bottom and neps hanging on the top in a partially shaded area. Lets see him get at them now!! Of course it may not be a good idea for my neps but untill I can find a way to keep em warm enough in my basement, I think I will have to keep em outside. The temp is around 80-90 deg outside and I have the humidity in the "closet" at 90%

I used dog cages in the past with good success, tho usually the "mesh" on them is too wide and you have to add hardware cloth or chickenwire to really keep the most persistent ones out
I'm not sure if that closet is gonna be safe, killing temps might build up in there on a hot day, and Sarrs really do enjoy tons of really bright sun...
Welcome to the wonderful world of outdoor CP growing!! Last I spoke to Jay he was saying that Squirrels are lazy and like loose "dirt" to dig in, so moist peat/sand is really attractive to them. It's odd (but fortunate) that they don't even bother to eat any parts of the plant eh?

Ah the joys of living in the middle of nowhere on a farm, we don't have squirrels! I mean sure we have them 20 acers back in the woodlot, but no where near the house, infact haven't seen one by the house ever and we've been there for atleast a decade! As for birds, I have 2 words for you BARN CATS! I do not need to net my strawbetties or cover my bog garden, my cats protect it all quite nicely, my biggest fear is the chickens and ducks! Sib

Squirrels and birds are nothing compared to racoons or even worse skunks.
