Hi all, I was wondering what everyone here uses to grow their VFTs... Lighting... Soil... Indoor/Outdoor... Water... Watering Technique...
i'm looking to see what is common so I can buy good stuff... If you use a name brand, please include it (for us newbies who don't know what 10-10-10 etc is! lol)
thanks!! *EQL*

Here is my kinda dumb question.. Do you have an outdoor area to overwinter VFTs? I've never had much luck indoors because they really, really need dormancy.

You can buy some device at your hardware center/ garden center which are either hygrometer or hygrometer/thermometer combined.
I've not read the URL i sent you entirely, but a terrarium isn't necessary. A tray filled with 1 cm of water will provide ample humidity by evaporation to the plant's surroundings.

Brian: never had luck with this in my area... but check Dom1234's posts about his bogs, I think he had success last winter with them, in Quebec (which is surely colder than southern Ontario)

Greetings,
I have successfully grown VFT in my outdoor bog for several years now. When winter approaches, I cover the bog with about 12" of pine needles. Every spring, when I remove them, everything underneath is there, relatively fresh looking and ready to go.
Currently, I have the dentate and red dragon forms in the bog, but I obtained a bunch of new forms this winter that I am going to try, once I propagate them.
The indoor plants are grown in pots in a covered aquarium under fluorescent lights. Dormancy will be provided by placing the pots and everything in a refrigerator in the basement.

Quick question: Do root bound VFTs grow larger than those with free running roots? I've noticed that VFTs grown in pots seem to be bigger in trap size than those I've planted in my bog and those I've got in a large container with other plants.

actually that is an interesting question. There is a difference noticed in size when planted in different "conditions". I noticed that closely planted plants stay small...whereas, widely planted plants get bigger than their counterparts. I guess in case of adult flytraps, based on ujust what I have done now, I recommend growing each plant seperately in its own pot. It allows room for its roots to spread. Vft roots are pretty long in my opinion which also adventure out sideways as the plant gets bigger. Each trap itself..i.e., each leaf makes a new root fiber. Here u see that the red dragon roots are 5 to 6 inches.
