Hi guys,
Brad on cp uk forums is giving out some seed. He agreed to send me a few.
I was planning on just planting them in my terrarium right under the new light. Acutally inside a small 3 inch pot.
I will keep media wet, and seeds directly sprinkled on top.
Then 16 hrs of light per day. Is that all?
I know old seeds require some stratification.
But Brad said these are fresh 2006 seed.
any thoughts or comments???
cheers,
varun

My last batch was scattered on 1:1 peat-sand soaked in dehumidifier water, covered with saran wrap and put in a sunny window terrarium. No stratifying. As soon as the seeds germinated I took off the saran wrap. So far there must be dozens of seedlings some with tiny traps.

awsome llyod. Thanx you for the info. I will pot them in the small pots in which i got my walmart vft;s. Fill it up to brim with media...then sprinkle seeds on it. Then I guess...I will put a transparent plastic cover on it....then wait for germination before removing the cover. BTW...I finally found a good pic posted by Ben on cp uk forums of the U.calcifyda. is this the plant ?? Thanks...hopefully the plant is not lost. It looks amazing.

I know VFT seeds can germinate without stratification, but i is also known that you usually achive a better germination rate with stratification.
yes, it is indeed a utricularia calycifida. I got one in spike too, from seeds I planted this spring, I should post some pics in a few weeks. Easy plant to take care off, as long as you keep it's media aerated and not soggy.

aerated and not tooo wet? ? I think u r right up my alley. Brad actually replied back saying that half can grow right away and half require stratification. But do you think the postal route here will make any difference?? I mean...its pretty cold out there. itsn't it like a few day stratification process??

For a proper stratification process, the seeds need to be wetted (a processs called imbibition) if you want the effect of this cold treatment to take effect.

aahhh...interesting. Good to know that Tom. BTW...is it ok to plant 50 seeds in a small 3 inch pot considering they are all soo small for an year anyways. AFter 1 yr + I will repot them to something bigger

Consider they'll be the size of a 25 cent piece in no time after germination. A 4-5" pot would suit the better i think in case of a high germination rate. if they are too crowded, they will grow slower...

Peat and sand are pretty cheap and easy to find. Just bulky and heavy respectively. I find the U. calycifida has much purpler stolons in my sunny window terrarium. Also you'll have lots of flowers. I just keep my pot constantly wet but never sitting in water.
Imbibition: that's a new term for me. Thanks, Tom. ;D
