Hello, Iwas wondering if anyone has put their vft into dormancy in the fridge without uprooting, like this: m.youtube.com/watch?v=CBzZRSAcd70I want to do my vft dormancy like this, is this a terrible idea? I've been scowering the boards for this particular technique but to no avail. Thanks in advance...

I also believe the best option for me to maintain a below 10 degree Celsius for the duration of dormancy, is to put the plant in the fridge.
I would love to learn any tips or mistakes from some one who has done this is the past.

Last year I uprooted mine and put it in a plastic bag in the fridge. It died, except for a baby clump. Not sure what I will do this year, maybe try to find a fungicide that will not kill the plant even faster. In another forum, someone suggested a cinammon solution.I would like to test different techniques on many plants but I doubt NSERC would fund it.

The plastic bag covering the plant prohibits air movement and creates great conditions for mould, so unless you treat for mould then you risk loosing your plant, it would be just as bad with no bag on it, as there isn't any air movement in a fridge and your water evaporation rate would go up. In short unless you have absolutely no other option I wouldn't do it, but I can understand if you have no other way. I assume you are in Canada and the winter is worse than zone 8.

so I guess I'm gonna go with in-the-fridge-no-bag method. Its my first dormancy and I don't wanna mess up my first plants. Also, I'm germinating vft seeds right now, should I skip their dormancy the first year? Thanks and take care.

Are newly created plants able to go and return from dormancy?

If you have just started the germination process and have the facility for giving them light and heat over winter, I would be tempted to keep them growing through this winter and let them go dormant next year. In theory they can go dormant, in ideal conditions, but with their small size it doesnt take much to upset the delicate root systems (cold and wet causes rot) and any sort of freezing causes problems.

Is there a maximum amount of time the plants can last in dormant state?
