Hi guys, I am very new to carnivorous plants. i was given a few pings (pinguicula) last year, and they've grown on me. propagating them is a breeze, but they haven't bloomed yet, and i don't know the variety, so don't ask . Now i couldn't help myself the other day and, on impulse, got a venus fly trap, since the ping next to it was way more costly (wish i had written down the name of the variety though, i very much liked the white blossom with the blue rim - i may yet go back to buy it....) so i've been doing a lot of reading on venus fly traps, since they are pretty much fabled to be difficult. I mainly grow african violets and gesneriads, so i know that supposedly difficult plants can be easy to grow once you know their preferences, and i already have terraria i can set up and lights, so this could get interesting now i just have to find places to get some more... and keep the ones i have alive.... Cheers, Karin

Thanks, guys! Acquiring varieties indiscriminately has gotten me into trouble with my African violets (400 plants and counting) so I have to take it slowly (And reduce that number!) But then I just caught myself looking at CP seeds on eBay... mackthompson, thanks for the offer, I'll definitely want to try sundews at some point, but maybe not just yet. First, I have to research what would grow in the environment I can provide. I am eyeing a terrarium I have in a south window, but despite a shade covering, it gets quite hot in summer and chilly in winter. Ideally I'll find CPs that will tolerate that. For now I am forever moving plants to accommodate heat & Cold resistance...

Just empty out a room in your house lol. Don't I wish... But then I'd end up with enough plants to need another house!

VFT's are easy if you treat them as mild temperate plants.

Just empty out a room in your house lol. At what point does it become the plants' house?

Welcome, Karin,
You probably saw a P. agnata if the flower had blue edges. That seems to be the most common ping found in garden centres after P. moranensis in its infinite varieties.

Thanks, i could swear it was labeled moranensis, but from the images, agnata is the one... leaf shape and all... now i know what to look for i suppose the one i already have is likely moranensis. will know more when it blooms though....
