This is going to sound ridiculous, laugh if you must....are there any vegetarian options for feeding VTFs in the winter? Just wondering if anyone has tried a high nitrogen food source other than blood worms or fish food. My urge to experiment is calling but if it's been tried already and failed...I won't bother. (A high protein algae like spirulina?, I dunno)

You could probably mix up some pellets starting with alfalfa (rabbit food pellets) for nitrogen and add minerals for the P and K. Not sure how easily digestible they'd be, though.

The alfalfa was the first thing that came to mind with the higher nitrogen content, I didn't get as far as rabbit food pellets, good thought. Thank you for your kind response Hal, I realized this would not be a popular subject when I put it out there.

It could end to be a nice experiment. Let us know the result if you go on with it. Bloodworm are easy to use and give good result, so you should focus on an easy way of feeding. Ex: if your preparation can be given to the plants with a pipet, it would be an advantage to BW that have to be given with forceps.

I'm going to go ahead, only thing is I won't have a control plant because I have only 4 different cultivars. Should be able to see the effects on the growth rate of one plant though, we'll see. Pipet idea is also interesting, it may be less destructive to the cilia.
