I'll be getting a new venus flytrap tomorrow, from the pictures I've seen from the guy I'm buying one off they seem pretty big. I'll be transplanting it into a foam coffee cup and it'll hang out under the skylight in my bathroom. I was wondering, when do I start feeding it bugs? I go every week to buy crickets for the tarantula and the guy I buy them from has all sorts of feeder insects, what do you think is best to feed? I was thinking small mealworms because if I try to feed crickets they will escape and go all over the universe. How many traps do I feed at a time and how often? I will get pics of the plant once I bring it home so you can get a better idea of it's size.

Good call on the crickets. Feeding any trap feeds the whole plant. When it first arrives home it will likely have its traps shut. It will open them as it adjusts. Flytraps do the normal photosynthesis thing so it will be getting some energy that way. Its short suit is its roots. They just are poor at grabbing nutrients for the plant to use. The bugs are its way of being fertilized. The same as other plants too much will harm them. Here is a solid starter link www.carnivorousplants.org/howto/GrowingGuides/Dionaea.php but there are very many out there going as deeply into it as you choose.

I usually feed mine with flies. Flies really bug us at home so I have to manually hunt them down and feed them to my VFT without killing them. It's quite fun, and it can be counted as daily physical activity (DPA from high school if you know what I'm talking about haha). There are so many flies during summer, I need more VFT! Anyway, when the plant is ready for food, the trap shall response to the 'food'. If the trap isn't ready, it won't close. As for food size, I've read that never put anything more than half size of the trap in it, otherwise the trap will be stressed and likely damaged afterwards. Happy growing

On this topic I bought a really dead looking VFT That I've been attempting to nurse back from the abyss and I held back from feeding it until it could grow some good sized traps. But it decided to take matters into its own hand.

That's totally fine Yeah don't count out the underdog. I wouldn't have put money on that trap being able to close let alone catch its own meal.
