Hi, I'm another lurker coming out from the shadows. I live in Toronto and have limited CP experience (thanks squirrel...) BUT, I'm an avid orchid grower and general plant lover, so I thought I'd give carnivorous plants another kick at the can. I bought 50 seeds of a mixed variety from eBay and another 20 from Triffid Nurseries (still waiting on those). Here we go! Started the 50 seeds in water:Things started getting stringy and moldy:So the seeds got transplanted into 100% LFS for germination:As of today (Day 16), I've got at least one hit:

Welcome hebtwo. Growing vft's from seed can be so much fun. If you put those little sprouts on Maiden's freeze dried bloodworm "meat ball" diet and you're obsessive about feeding/repotting them. You can have a full collection of adult sized plants in about a year Good growing!

I was just looking at that this afternoon and thought it was a great idea for me to try! I just have to succeed in not screwing things up until these little buggers have traps! Yum yum.

VFT seeds do well in 1:1 peat/perlite.

VFT seeds do well in 1:1 peat/perlite. Luckily they do well in LFS as well! Plus, I generally prefer the texture and look and results I've seen from pure sphagnum as a fly trap medium.

I am a newb who has has success with growing and dividing VFTs in Live sphagnum. But I don't know what it would take to convince me to try germinating in it again. Far from saving a step it has proven a major nuisance to checking the wee seedlings and improving spacing. I'd go with a contrasting medium for the very early stages next time. grack

...welcome to the OCPS. I have never soaked VFT seeds before, be careful the LFS doesn't outgrow your seedlings. For me, that has been problematic. Cheers!

I agree that it can be a bit tricky with seedlings once the sphagnum starts going green, but I'm in a good position to obsess and keep a constant eye on the little guys at all times. A second seed is visibly germinated (with another two or three potentially, but still too small to tell). I ordered a reverse mount macro ring for my camera the other day, so with any luck pictures should drastically improve in the days to come.

So I got my reverse lens mount ring today and have started using my good camera for macro shots: I can count with the naked eye between 7-10 seeds that have germinated so far. Check it out A cool little fungus spore: Behind the scenes:
