I finally had enough of the weeds and grass growing through my pears, so I'm ripping them up, removing the weeds, and replanting them. The plants that were doing fantastic are suffering from two very hard winters, as well as the shade from the weeds. I've been cutting off the sections with new growth, replanting them, and tossing the older dried up sections. I've added some weed barrier around the edges of the garden to stop them from getting in that way, and have put in some sedum mat as well. I'm thinking of using a top dressing to help with weeds as well, but definitely don't want to use mulch. Would pea gravel work for a top dressing? Any other ideas on what to use?

I used to grow mine in a gravelly area.

The area they're in is fairly sandy, so they're good there. I'm just looking for something to go on top to try and slow the weeds down.
