I have a low-power laser engraving machine. It's my hobby to find something to engrave; different surfaces, materials, configurations result in different outcome! My little machine:

Very cool. How much was the machine? I got to get me one to engrave my tags, haha.

I don't want to post the purchase details here as I'm not trying to sell the machine. I'll PM you the details if you are interested

I never read the label before Did you make it yourself? Looks like two stepper motors on a platform with the laser. The software would have been the tricky part.

I never read the label before Did you make it yourself? Looks like two stepper motors on a platform with the laser. The software would have been the tricky part. I was planning to make a similar machine myself in Jan, since it's pretty much 2 stepper motors and a laser diode put together like you said. And the parts are available in 2-3 dvd-burner. However, I soon realize I do not have the time to commit to the project, because of work and other projects going on. So I looked it up and finally decided to buy one instead. And you are right, the software is the tricky part. I admit that the software that comes with this machine doesn't allow much flexibility, but it is much nicer than my level of DIY for sure. So there's a reason to buy something, even though we might able to make it ourselves.

What a good idea! That will sure prevent all the fading. Funny how one has the tools, and never thought of making labels for plants. Dope... And just being a spoil-sport But for safety please make sure that you're wearing the correct wavelength safety goggles for the laser. Laser light can reflect unexpectedly at times. And for those who want to go the full DIY route, there is a good Instructable Pocket laser engraver, there is a few clones (e.g. Benbox) of this idea. For control software GRBL is getting really good, with a lot of support tools around it. The tricky part would be to get your design / logo into G-Code, not as many good open-source CAM tools around. Cheers

Cheers Thanks for the tips, Henk! I do wear a pair of green glasses that are supposed to block most of the purple laser light during the engraving process. The world looks really green when I wear that, haha.

I think my uncle has something similar, he wanted me to draw up a simple character so he could engrave it on a whatever. Still haven't gotten to that, busy busy. :/
