Hello, My indoor flytraps have had traps closing without prey in them frequently and it seems to be affecting their growth. They close completely for many days or don't re-open at all, and if they do re-open, it;s only very briefly and then they close again. My first thought was that pests were triggering them shut, but if that were the case they shouldn't stay shut because they need continuous stimulation to seal shut. Then I thought it was something to do with the heat, but a cooling them with a fan did not help. Here's a picture to show what I mean: They are growing in rinsed coco peat which shouldn't be the cause - all of my other flytraps grow well in it. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

The same thing also happens to my plants. I notice whenever there is a drastic change in temperature, traps will close and secret digestive juice on their own with no preys stuck inside. In my growing condition red plants seem to be more susceptible to this phenomenon in Fall just before dormancy. I normally open the closed trap and throw in a few fish pellets so it can go to work.

Are these indoor VFT's? I've only grown them outdoors for years and have not seen this, even after a heavy rain or large temperature variations.

You're likely to damage the plants by forcing traps open. Just leave them alone, outside and the bugs will happily go to their doom.

The trees in my backyard have gotten so big that my outdoor flytraps never really look as good as they used to unfortunately. That`s why I am switching to indoor VFT growing for a while. ilikewhatido: Glad I'm not the only one this happens to! I couldn't find any other info on it. Maybe the fan will help them eventually - it has only been a few days. I moved them a little further from the lights too so the heat isn't as intense.

Maybe the age of the plant and the variations in temp are factors since Fall and cooler temps are starting in early I am new but would not worry unless this continues once they are inside Try new media it might help.

The ones that are doing it are the ones that have been inside all year.
