1/2 or 3/4" glass will be very heavy, expensive and difficult to find. I'd just use regular window glass. You can get it cut at Home Hardware.

First time I publicly disagree with Hal (I think?). I'd recommend you use plexi rather than glass. Lighter, easy to work and no worries about breaking. Not as transparent as glass but you are looking thru the front, not the top.

What I do for the glass is get 2 pieces cut that each cover half the tank then an inch more. Then you can slide them over each other to open up some space at each end or you can completely seal the tank.
Plexi is lighter and easier to handle and you can cut it yourself. Even cut little finger holes in it to make it easy to lift. But I find it harder to care for in the long run.

Plexiglass also warps Especially if close to a T5. It yellows over time as well and permanently scratches. Plus it's quite expensive in comparison.
I used to use plexiglass along time ago and now it's for keeping smaller pots from tipping over on my racks

A good start Paul. Also, depending on the size, you can get some cheap photo frames in the dollar store. The glass pane is nice and thin and should be sufficient for our purposes. In the past I got glass cut from Lowes, but I found it to be too thick. I will be on the lookout again for my new tank that I am working on. I'll let you know if I find an alternate source.
