Who knew that going grocery shopping could be so interesting. There amongst the tropical plants was a display of Tacca chantrieri, the black bat plant. I don't have a photo to post yet. I had seen this plant in catalogues and in books, but never had the opportunity to buy a plant in person. So of course I put one into my cart. When I got home, I researched it, and see that it has some humidity and other exacting requirements. Challenge accepted. Stay tuned for my adventure into blooming a Tacca, or at least keeping it green.

Cool which grocery store? I'm betting on Thrifty Foods.

Good luck with it. Never had success with seeds.

I have a black and a white
They are very very hard to grow here as a house plant.
Bright filtered light but no direct sun. They must be kept decently warm and prefer a humidity above 60%
They are not that hard to keep alive. However keeping the leaves from curling and getting it to flower is another story. I have had better success with regular fertilizing
They do get quite large. 4'
Good luck

Yikes. I was right about the challenge part. Thanks Cory for the tips. Luc, I bought the plant at Country Grocer $9.99.

Country Grocer does have some pretty good plants at times. Did you notice how they had a picture of a S. purpurea on they shelves last year?

I saw some for sale when I was at the grocery store earlier tonight! Beautiful blooming plants for $29.99 and lots of them! Some were still wrapped in their paper sleeves. I was really excited and took some pictures. Needless to say, a lot of people were giving me weird looks as I snapped away with my phone.
