Bare roots wrapped in damp paper towel. Put the whole thing in a Ziploc bag. Then box it up with some crushed paper to stop it bouncing around.
Be careful, they're sensitive.

Many years ago when I came to canada and tried and failed growing a Mimosa pudica from home depot, my mom used to tell me that it grows on the streetside in our home town in India.. they grow pretty much anywhere and are prolific. Funny how the same plant is so fragile in cultivation.

Another one would be water hyacinth. We sell them for 5 $ a pop in summer and people buy them by the bag load for easy coverage and nutrient control in ponds.
We caught a couple from florida litterally in tears they were laughing so hard.
I heard a couple manatee jokes in with the mix, it's debatable which they were having the biggest laugh about. Their state's most invasive plant being sold for money or those snub nosed giants :-D

As you walked the plants all recoiled from your steps.

Follow hal advice.
On my side, I have difficulty assuming some tuberous drosera get mowed in Australia because they grow along houses walls ...

I was going to touch it to make it close and get it in a pill bottle with a damp paper towel and then in a box or is this a bad idea??

You need to figure two things:
1 - Do the recipient will be able to get the plant out of the pills bottle without breaking it ? 2 - What will happens if the box get turned on all side. Will the plant get crushed ?
With paper towel and ziplock, the plant will be stable, won't move in the trip and stay moist. Even if the box is turned over, it will not have any impact on the plant.

I may ditch the pill bottle and find another more suitable container plus I have a sheet of bubble wrap after I send it bareroot with the moist paper towel in a sealed Ziploc baggie with a few holes for air in a taped box and I may tape the baggie to the inside to make sure it does not bounce around

Fair enough... make sure that if you decide to air mail it that you check on jetstream temperatures.

Might be easier and faster to give him a seed to take with him and let him grow it himself.
