I just ordered a ceph from Urban Bog, and need sand for my potting recipe. Where should I be looking for the silica sand that most recipes describe? I certainly want to start out right with this plant.
Just checked my stores. I have an old bag of cactus sand, labeled Natural Sand. Looks coarse and granular. Any ideas whether this would work.

Silica sand has become quite hard to find here in the states. I believe people have switched to pool filter sand but I could be wrong so don't quote me on that.

You can find silica sand at Buckerfields, it come in small plastic bags. Not the most coarse stuff around but it works and my cephs seem to like it.

Pour some vinegar on't. If it fizzes, let it soak (see lloyd's post on "acid washing").

I think you sell the stuff I have been using Nol, it's called Island's Finest. I'll test the sand tomorrow with my TDS meter. Plus vivgrows regardless of where you get your sand from we can test it if you can't. (I live 5 mins from your work and have a useless degree from there too)

I found a supplier with silica sand that tested over 95% purity (I think it was around 98 or 99) and they seemed to be a large operation. This was several months ago but I could dig them out if you need. There's also a web site of Canadian manufacturers that'll list them - but of course I can't remember the name now...

Thank you to all that left answers. Because I was in a hurry to plant my ceph that arrived today, I rushed out to Buckerfields after work. I hope that what works for Luc will work for me. Fingers crossed. I am in love with Cephalotus now that I have seen one in real life. This means I will worry about that plant like a new baby.
With more time I will check out Slegg for their sand offerings.
Thanks Luc for offering to test my sand. Tell me how you do it, as I do own a rarely used TDS meter. And I have dibs on having you as a partner in a useless trivial game, as you do have that useless degree. I should arrange to scooter over and learn from you, about plants, not useless stuff.

I've been banned from playing some trivia games with some friends... Sure, just bring something to carry some plants off with you.
