I'm currently waiting on 25-30 typical x hummers Cephy seeds that are en route.
I've been burning my eyes out reading through media, cold stratification method and the rest.
If the seed stock is verrrry fresh is there any need for this?
Or do I just put them out in a well lit not full sun location?
I mean they are from Australia lol.
Thanks for your time...

Hi N,
Even if they are from Australia, it doesn't mean they don't experience a cold period. If I were you I would first ask your seller if he ever sprout ceph seeds successfully and if so, how. You could then follow his advice because you are in front of a dilemna. Ceph seeds don't seem to have a long shelf time but for me require a natural cold stratification to sprout well...
So, if those were my seeds, I'll sow half now and the other half in November on my unheated windowsill. In my opinion, it is way to out at the moment to sow those seeds but if your seller has success that way, why not try it?

I've only had success in TC so I don't know. They did take months to germinate in TC. 4-6 months if memory serves me well.

After some asking around I found the authority on Ceph seeds on CPUK.
His response VIA PM was everything you ever need to know about sowing Cephalotus seed. Thank you "Snapperhead51" ...
"In my short 35 years of growing this plant, I personally would not recommend wet stratification of cephalotus seed. Unless you are doing it at place of habitat or origin of the native plant. In my opinion you / we get unwanted fungus or fungal growth that will inhibit the germination of the seed, this is why most have poor germination rates. I get approx 99% success from viable seed. The other thing is many have know idea how to pollinate the flower properly and you get much sterile seed even when embryo is present. My procedure is :- allow seed to dry by air warmth from total ripening stage, usually take 1 to 2 months from ripe seed pods, harvest seed that is dry , put into paper or baking paper handmade envelopes, place into small airtight containers and put in fridge at 2 to 4 c for min of 3 to 4 months. In very early spring, rehydrate the seed by soaking in rain water, at room temp, for min of 48 hrs. Then sow wet on chopped sphag moss and sand and peat mix or a mix or your choosing, and put into sunny place at temp of 20 to 25 c . Germination is much quicker with per-soaked seed as that's 1 of the triggers for its germination, you can add some GA3 at 350 to 400 ppm to the rain water as well, this dose will help with some older seed germination. Ceph viable seed can stay viable for up to 4 years. hope that helps cheers J "
Thanks again for the fantastic info man!

Winter monthly low minimum temperatures for Albany, Australia, Degrees C. 2.4 1.7 0.1 1.6 2.0 www.weatherzone.com.au/climate/station.jsp?lt=site&lc=9500Albany has a Mediterranean climate so the rain falls in the winter. You would think a cool, wet stratification would enhance germination. That was the instructions my seeds came with. It didn't work. Next time I will try the dry/cool stratification as outlined above.

...35 years of growing Ceph's???, that's all??? I'd say this guy's credibility is questionable at best........hahahahahaha. All kidding aside, none of my Ceph seeds popped after wet strat, will definitely try THIS method with my next Ceph seeds. Cheers!
