Thanks H2O (Justin) for updating our OCPS forum... and now it includes succulents! Anyone else on OCPS enjoy Lithops? I've got about a hundred assorted lithops growing happily here at my home, and am always happy to expand my collection of stone faces! ... I'm also into barrel form cacti... mostly south american cacti - gymnocalycium, parodia, notocactus, echinocactus and others [/URL]

I have a lithops and a few pleiospilos. I recently watered them for the first time successfully. There have been a few watering accidents that resulted in a few deaths.

Lithops have always intrigued me, but I haven't got any - yet. Sheridan Nurseries has a few varieties. Maybe one day.
I have recently acquired about a dozen species of cacti, mostly small barrel forms and 2 species of Trichocerus. I just killed a Euphorbia obesa by over watering it. I discovered after the fact that under a thin layer of gravel it was potted in pretty much pure peat so it never drained.
I also have lots of tender Echiveria, aloe and sedums in the garden, which I bring in every winter. And this year I bought a pencil cactus, "Euphorbia tirucalli "Sticks of Fire" and I've taken a dozen cuttings that will be available for barter in the spring. The genus Euphorbia is just amazing with the various plant forms it encompasses.

I picked up a lithop at Canadian Tire last summer. It's still alive, making it my longest living one. How do you grow yours? I'd love to get mine better looking. I also have a barrel cactus that is enjoying the deck this summer, and my side garden is almost completely overgrown with prickly pear. They got a slow start after our brutal winter, but they're growing good and sending out flowers now.

I've had more or less succulents for over around 40 years. Now I have Euphorbia, Lithops, Cacti (an odd assortment of South American and Mexican) and one Portualaca. Tirucalli has super poisonous sap so be careful. I'm even growing some Pereskia to try some grafting.

I got a couple of Lithops at Sheridan Nurseries last week and have seeds from a dozen species on their way from Silverhill in SA. When do they flower in the Northern Hemisphere and what's the watering cycle? The literature is somewhat contradictory.

I have a great book on Lithops. They can be watered more than you think. The key is to really keep them on the dry side when the new leaves are coming out of the old ones. You want the old leaves to shrivel up and disappear to let the new growth come out. Mine flowered in the winter. I have some seeds from Silverhill too-I'm waiting for the fall to sow them

Lithops have always fascinated me as well. I remember one time we were advertising them as 'zombie brains' and hey flew off the shelves. The first picture I came across that made me interested in them was a large bulb pan topped with gravel withe literally hundreds of lithops growing. I've only ever had one lithops before and I killed it from not watering enough. I wish I knew about only keeping them dry when the new growth came out. I literally watched the two leaves shrivel but was too scared to water.

Nice Lithops! I just bought a bag of seeds so I'm going to give them a go. Maybe in a few years I'll have a nice little tray of these things.

My lithops flowered last month, and for the first time, I tried to pollinate them. I'm not sure if they'll set seed... but it'd sure be nice if I can raise some offsprings off these little beasts!

I have a lithop book and it says that they are easy to pollinate with a soft brush.
