A few years ago I visited a cool nursery called Dragonfly Gardens near Lake St. Peter. It was small and overgrown with weeds but there was some neat stuff. They had a Staghorn Sumac with divided leaves that looks like a Japanese Maple. I wanted to try it but my wife was afraid it would be too invasive.. Now I have a steep slope on my property with full sun where its not safe to push a lawn mower, and the neighbours kind of compain if I just leave it. I would really like to naturalize these over the slope, maybe start with a hundred and let them spread, my wife is now on-board too. Problem is Dragonfly is no longer in business although a neighbour was able to sell me a dozen small plants for all of $20 last year. I think about 8 survived the mid August transplant. So now I find that yes you can buy cutleaf sumac at nurseries but because they are hot now market price is like $30 to $40 each, and I can't see spending $4k for plants that self seed and sucker like crazy.. The name I think is Rhus Typhina Laciniata. I'm not necessarily after the new variety "Tiger Eyes" though it would be nice. Does anyone know where I could get these bulk bare root, or if they are true to seed where I could get seeds? Any way to take one baby sumac and propagate it ten-fold this year? I know, if I was patient I could populate the slope with root divisions over the next ten years, but I'm in a hurry!

LOL if only you had said something earlier!!!I spent half of last year trying to remove a grove of them from an established bed at work! Chances are that I will have a bunch of them sprout up this spring, I can let you know if you'd like? Thanks, Sib

Thats ok Sybil, thanks for checking. Turns out the slope isn't ready for planting yet, all the material was dumped on one side so I'll be busy this summer with shovel and wheelbarrow! (Now, how do I insert the little frowny face in "Quick Reply"?) One click on exalt to see what happens..
