Did you order it online or buy it in a local store??
I bought mine from HB. When I got it,there were just 3 traps I gave it either rainwater)melted snow in winter)
and a combination of sunlight and LED lights a max 12 hours but some days 10 hours, rainy days it got the LED the full 10 hours.
I also collect rainwater on those rainy days.
A quick note, ordering online from a nursery will cost more but they are more disease resistant and healthy, I would avoid store plants, ofen they become a chairity case and might die soon from the way they were grown. You will need Perlite of something to aerate the soil.I did not at first and re-potting it seemed to make mine grow better with aeration Perlite is not the only option, I rinsed aquarium gravel and used that!
Make sure that your pots have drainage holes, and use the tray method to water them. In winter use melted snow to water it,collect rainwater or use RO or distilled water. Tap water left out might work and it might kill the plant so stat away from tap water., and have patience Mine died off in July, they are just now making and opening the traps. NEVER use fertilizer or potting soil, they are laced with chemicals that will burn the roots and kill the plant sooner than later.
do not buy anything that says Scotts or Miricalgro
Only plant in Sphagnum or long fiber peat moss by itself planting AND whatever you are using for aeration
Traps die! do not force them to close because it use a lot of energy from the plant.
If they turn black trim it off even the trap but leave anything green they still benefit the plant.
After 3 or 4 times closing the traps get unresponsive and die...Its natural they will grow bigger in the spring after coming our of Dormancy
A way to tell if you have a adult(might take 3 to 5 years, but might flower after one year) plant is if it flowers in the spring, cut it close to the base if you can as soon as you see it unless you want seeds then le it flower the trade off is collect seeds vs bigger traps and bigger plant. its your call if you think the plant is sickly looking, avoid letting it flower.

If yours seems to flower a lot ,it might be a idea to contact a nursery and ask them or ask someone on this forum more experienced than me,I was mew as of June 2013.
One thing about dormancy, until the plant flowers it does not need dormancy, once it flowers it needs Dormancy every year.
My friend told me that a VFT only flowers if its healthy.
I never heard of a VFT making a flower more than once a year because of the energy the plant puts into it,unless your do flower more often try new peat, new water, make sure it is getting humidity,if none of this works...contact a nursery, unless you cut the flower stalk off as soon as its seen.I had mine since June and its healthy and has not flowered yet !! I even got more growing than what was sent to me!!
This does not matter but what kind of flytrap is it?
