Repotted some Cephalotus today because the media was drying much too fast and took some photos. New and old pot. New pot is 5.5" wide. Media mixed up Leca in bottom of the pot Roots are about 8" long Tons of roots at the bottom These big thick roots were everywhere Potted up without top layer With top layer (pure LFS) Also potted up a smaller. This one is "Czech Giant" (thanks again Devon) Again long roots. They actually stop just below my wrist. Potted up Then some small pullings. Couldnt believe how long these roots are! Group photo

Great looking plants Drew. Is the media just perlite and lfs (50:50)?

Thanks DJ. Thats the ratio I aim for, but its in no way scientific, I just mix till it feels "right".

How do you water those plants, Drew? Do they sit in water or do you water them from above?

Thanks guys.
Hal, I always water from above and never let the pots sit in water.

Great pics Drew. These may motivate me to try and separate my new off shoot from my ceph. Are those pullings you show pics of just pitchers pulled from the main plant, or individual plants growing off the roots?

Thanks James. The last two plants are leaf pullings from the main plant about 3 months ago. I dont have any plans to divide the main plant for a while.

Hi Drew,
Thanks for sharing this repotting.
I'm actually using a mix similar to your own but I'm considering replacing the LFS by peatmoss because my ceph have the bad tendencie to crash. How much did you let the LFS dry between watering ? Until the top is crusty like on your 3 pic ?
If so, I keep mine too wet.

I think you may have been keeping it too wet. The top is always allowed to completely dry out before I water again. When I repotted was about 1 day before I would normally water again and there was no water to be squeezed out of the media, but just moist.
When I first potted it up into the blue pot I was watering once every week. About a weak ago I was having to water nearly every second day (temperatures were cool) so I figured a bigger pot was in order. I only repotted this plant about 8 or 9 months ago maybe so didnt take long to fill the pot with roots.
I have a desk fan on medium power about 14" infront of the Ceph blowing whenever the lights are on. This I think helps dry the top of the media and growth point, while still keeping the roots nice and moist.

Hi Drew, my question is:
Do you water them "all around", avoiding direct water on the plant, or what else? Thanks and........my compliments!

Hi Drew - Nice looking cephs! Mine are all seedlings, about the same size as your pullings. I admit to letting mine sit in water, which I have been told time and time again is a no-no. But they seem to be growing just fine. Well for the year I have had them. Still, no one can argue with your results. Those things are beauties.
