Somebody at OCPS told me about RONA, I went to my local one and sure enough tons of bags of gritty silica sand. I'm not even sure the bags were labelled-I poked a tiny hole in one to see if it was the right stuff.

Yup there is Syb. Thats where I got my silica sand. Can't stand to use it though! I washed the crap out of it but it still manages to kill every plant I have had in it so far!

I don't rinse the silica sand I buy at all....I just measure and mix with peat and perlite....done.

I only rinse silica if it's for seedlings, although I'm not sure if it helps at all.
The new growth seems to be coming back fast!

Even the terrestrial utrics seem Ok with the sand and they are fairly sensitive, I think.

Curlingguy - thats impressive growth. Can you provide some information on the good growing conditions for your ceph? I'm interested in learning - the day temp, - night temp, - day humidity range, - night humidity range - type of lighting used, - distance from the light?
Thanks Chin

Just sits in open in kitchen....so humity relatively low...maye 40%...I don't measure it.... night temperature low is maybe 60F right now ....daytime high about 70F.........I use flourescent lights ...four foot....the GE "Daylight F40" bulbs. I bottom water and they sit in about 1/2 inch of water. Pot is about six inches high...(plastic container food from supermarket came in). try to keep about an inch from light but often they are further away then that (light is cool enough that they can be close to it).
