My flytraps are still in the fridge, but I am thinking of when they are out in the terrarium. I have two 15 watt florescent bulbs a foot away during growing season. This has resulted in the traps turning brown and black from too much heat. If I put them in another terrarium where the light is six inches further away, I don't get those marvelous reds and maroons even varieties that normally have them like Akai Ryu and Scarlett Bristletooth from Kheen's. Any advice? I sure don't want to fry them anymore.

Why are you growing them in a terrarium? Grow them outside, or if not at least on a windowsill.

I grow mine inside and really close to the lights (just inches) but the heat produced is just warm. Are you sure your setup is hot enough that its baking them? If thats the case get new lights!! I purchased some 100 watt CFL lights that my plants can safely grow within an inch of it without drying up or dying from the heat. Otherwise get a small fan and start blowing some air around to cool those lights. That could help big time for you.

Well, I started the flytraps in a terrarium when I was stupid beginner, and because when I had the chance to see Rick Hillier's stunning collection he had his flytraps in terrariums, and so my flytraps just kind of stayed in terrarium. Instead of terrarium, I could place the pots on a tray under the lights so heat does not stay trapped.Would that work? Something was sure frying them!

I have my VFT sitting in a tray about one inch from a 43W (150W) CFL and the crazy plant is now flowering. The flower is almost touching the light and no ill affects to the plant. Hope that helps.

15 watts may just be not enough light rather than burning! I keep most of mine outside as well during the summer. But more light would help me thinks! Any other input would be good as well but really I think its lack of light rather than burning. I could be wrong though.

Yep, to grow well indoors you really need some serious light cause the sun is a pretty hard source to beat or even compare to!
I would try taking them out of the terrarium and see if that helps. Also if they are small enough, maybe try putting a lid on them so they keep humidity but not heat? The main part is though that the light is not enclosed so the heat is able to be blow off or drift away in any direction and is not collected in the tank.
If you look at my picture thread from recently you will see some 100 watt CFLs (2 of them for 4 feet btw) which light my plants and they get fairly close. Its intense light but since its a open setup the heat generated goes up and never builds up on the plants so they stay a cool 24 degrees most of the time.
