Hello everyone: Just joined a few weeks ago because my son and I have started to get into the carnivorous plant hobby (hope I don't offend anyone with that statement). I purchased him some VFT seeds from Ebay, along with some D. capensis and some Nepenthes seeds, but I just wanted to find out how to go about germinating the seeds and how long should it take before the seeds actual start to germinate. Thanks Dave.

As for the capensis seeds, place them on the top (do not cover with more soil) of some peat and perlite 50:50 (wear a mask and work in a well ventilated area, peat/perlite dust isn't good for the lungs). Capensis is a weed, so make yourself a couple pots (square/round, at least 6 inches deep(they form a decent root when mature), plastic or glazed ceramics, and water on the tray system, keeping an inch in the tray at all times, or letting it dry out between waterings. You can't go wrong with this for capensis, they are tougher than steel! Sow sparingly as when they mature, they become quite large (5-6 inch diameter, height: mine's now 7 inches tall...) VFT seeds need stratification. Place on a damp paper towel, fold over, place in a ziplock bag, seal it and place in the fridge for 6-8 weeks. Should you have gotten decent seed, you should see some might have already sprouted. Sow them all on the same media as previously mentionned and place under artificial lighting (same for capensis, sun is too strong for seedlings at this point, and neps as well) As for nep seeds, i have had no luck with them so far, so hopefully someone else will chime in to assist you with those. Hope this helps! and if you have any questions, feel free to send me a message by clicking on my name and choosing 'send private message'. If you want to make a terrarium, here's a thread i made explaining how to make a simple 'planted-style' terrarium. ocps.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=terrariums&action=display&thread=3099

Madman: This is not a carnivorous plant hobby. It is a carnivorous plant ADDICTION. You will earn the name madman indeed. But you will be in our good company as we all are a bit nuts about these plants.

i second canadaone here!
as for the neps, did the supplier told you when the seeds were harvested? seeds of this genus tend to decline in germination potential fairly rapidly, around 2-3 months after the harvest. also, what specie(s) of nep it is? good luck!

not to sound a downer, i just want you to be aware that alot of seed sold on ebay is of questionable viability, if they dont sprout dont get discouraged. Sib

I agree with Syb, I gto seeds from ebay that didn't sprout, but the extra's the guy gave me sprouted... so I guess the others weren't viable, but the others were and I proved to myself that I can actually sprout nep seeds. lol

in addition to the seeds' age, the way it was stored after harvest is almost as important. Seed can be preserved for long periods of time in the fridge, so make sure that the seller did that, if he did you will probably get much better germination results.
