Hey Everyone, You probably heard of the "nectar spoons" (or nectar rolls) on heliamphora but may have wondered why this specific epithet. Well, Wonder no longer! Large nectar drops peeking from the underside of this Charlie-Chaplin hat-like H. heterodoxa nectar spoon H. neblinae's nectar spoon. Note the nectar drops extending down the midrib into the bowels of the pitcher, obviously to entice unsuspecting prey to their demise... H. neblinae - view of the spoon's underbelly A newly-formed H. tatei tatei pitcher open for business. Note the beads of nectar drops oozing on the inside wall of pitcher. Apparently, nectar is secreted by specialized glands in the nectar spoon and on the inner surface of pitchers. These plants are grown inside near southern-facing windowsills. On warm days, a distinctive honey-sweet scent can be detected around certain species. Cheers, Rob

Thanks guys for your comments. Doug, you know you set the bar pretty high with your catchy, "Flight of the Quantum Butterfly", so I couldn't be sloppy

C12, many of my helis are also sending up flower spikes - must be the cooler temps/photoperiod that stimulates flowering. Here's a recent pic of a H. heterodoxa stalk You can try pollinating your helis (though haven't tried myself) - rub the anthers between the fingers to release a small amount of yellow pollen, then touch your finger to a receptive stigma of a 2nd recently opened flower on the same plant (self-pollination) or on another plant (cross-pollination). Success hinges on using stigmas within 1-2 days of opening - if they are already turning brown, ithey are too old and won't be receptive. Good luck.

Thanks! I'll do that The photoperiod does have a lot to do with it. A member On Terraforums said he just boosted the photoperiod by a few hours and it would make his flower. I did the same but aso added a stronger light, and now my first heli flower

Awesome shots!
If anyone is able to get their Heliamphora to produce seed, I'd love to trade or purchase some!
