hi
My D. Capensis Red is setup in a terrarium that doesnt usually get any bugs in it. Anyone have any ideas with what and how i should feed it?
Tips on feeding capensis would be appreciated as well. Thx in advance.
Mark

Fruit flies? By some fruit, and once the bugs start coming try to move the fruit near the terrarium and see if the flies go in.

Although D. capensis doesn't really need a whole lot to "eat", they do certainly benefit from an occasional meal here and there. If you have other plants around the house and have noticed little fungus gnats around, these plants are great at nailing the adults.
As previously mentioned, stick a banana outside for a couple of days and then bring it in. You will eventually develop a colony of fruit flies that you can feed your sundew. If your terrarium is not fully enclosed, I would recommend putting the plant in something that you can seal, dump a bunch of flies in and slam the lid shut in a hurry, or you won't be very popular with the other people in your household. I'm speaking from experience here... I accidentally knocked the lid off of a colony and released around 500 of the critters into the house. And I remember to this day that when my wife says my full name followed by a bunch of loud Greek, I run for my life.

Freeze dried blood worms from an aquarium store are good.

I still use the old standby Betta pellets, you just crush them up and sprinkle them on and voila

Lloyd and Mabudon... I forgot about those options - thanks for reminding me. At least those things don't fly all over the house when you spill them

Yeah, last time I created a nice swarm of fruitflies it didn't go over too good at ALL

fish food flakes also works well. I do culture some bean bettles and they get eaten pretty good.

what frequency do you feed them, i used to feed my nep ventricosa once per new pitcher (1 bug per new trap, whether it be a spider or a fly, even an earthworm once!) if i were to use freeze dried blood worms, do i re-hydrate them first? and how often do you repeat? Steven

For me it's every 3-4 weeks for nep's, a full tweeser pinch of blood worms per pitcher, no re-hydrating. For the rest, I usually put one per plant or two if it's big.
