Hi
Just wanted to know if it is normal to have 4 trigger hairs on one side of the trap instead of 3. Or is it mutation?
Comments? Any takers?

Well i've never ever heard of this mutation before but it sounds interesting. maybe someone with more growing experince will know . i think its fabulous to know that a trap can have more hairs, means MORE food!. (P.S)-each side of the venus flytrap's "mouth" have three hairs, so dont be confused about this. . -Wayne- Cheers!

Back in the '80's, I had purchased some VFT from a plant shop in town that had absolutely huge traps on them. They were obviously resold from some commercial venture, but what I recall about these plants was that I could nearly get my entire thumb into it and that the traps regularly had many more than the normal three trigger hairs per "trap half". One of them had 11 trigger hairs spread over each half (22 in total). They were blood red in the inner part and some of the outer part was totally red as well.
Unfortunately, I did not know about their need for dormancy at the time and I ultimately lost them. It's be nice to know what they were and be able to get them again.

WOW! thats a lot of hairs. I guess its not that that uncommon for them to have more than your regular 3 hairs per "trap half".

I have seen nearly 6 trigger hairs on each leaf on my B52 when it was huge. I find that as the trap size increases...the probability for more trigger hairs is higher..which seems to make sense. The B52 at that time had 2 inch traps on it.
