Greetings,
My LFS supplier stopped carrying new zealand LFS and switched over to Chilean sphagnum about 6 months ago. I recently potted up a bunch of newly aquired nepenthes in this stuff, and in two of the pots, I have found sarracenia seedlings (just putting up their first tiny pitcher).
All of my sarracenia are outdoors in my bog garden and I've never had any seed on the premises.
I'm wondering how the seed got into the moss to begin with, and if anyone ever had sarracenia sprout up from Chilean sphagnum and what species might it have been?

That's a real puzzling thing eh??
You should definitely let em grow, whatever they are, just to find out for sure. I'm pretty curious as to what they are... could it be that the "chilean" sphag was actually grown somewhere else?? Like, it's the real species, just grown elsewheres??
Is there any chance it's a Heli maybe??

Hey Mab... Regarding the moss - yep, it's definitely LFS, pretty good quality, but it is full of twigs, roots and other stuff, so you do have a bit of sorting to do with it. I'm using it as a base for my neps with a top dressing of live New Zealand LFS. Of course, I have to let those sarracenia grow out - I'm really curious about what they are and how they got in there. Could it be a heli? Hell-i no >>> Rick <<< That's a real puzzling thing eh?? You should definitely let em grow, whatever they are, just to find out for sure. Okay, no Heli, but you got them covered already anyways - too bad it takes so DANG long to actually see what kind o' Sarr you've sprouted there eh?? I am REALLY curious- perhaps we could have our longest-running contest ever based on this- guess what the Sarr is, then in like 5 years we can determine who won, then the prize is a division of the plant after it's grown another 4 or 5 years.... somehows I think that might be stretchin it......

Holy cripe, I'll be DEAD by then. In that case, maybe the prize should be my entire collection.

Maybe we could do DNA testing.

lol! well...I guess it shouldn't be that hard to distinguish a sarr seedling from a heli seedling.

Well Skip its dormancy for the first year or two and maybe it'll be big enough to identify by next summer or winter! Cya
