hi, i thought i would introduce myself as a new member and a newbie to carnivorous plants. i actually don't even have any plants yet (too broke haha), but i wanted to make an account here so i could start asking questions and gaining knowledge. i want to be as prepared as possible for when i do start growing i've been reading about bog gardening and am considering eventually attempting to overwinter some sarrs and maybe hardy drosera outside... it gets colder here than any of the bog gardens i have read about (up to -40) so i think it will be a challenge. i know there ARE some sarrs/sundews up in the prince albert national park even farther north than here so it must be possible... it might not be my first attempt at cp gardening though. i would also love to start growing some less-outdoor-hardy, but still fairly forgiving, neps, VFTs and pings indoors (some can go outside for sunshine during the summer and be taken in for winter). i have a large, bright south facing window and have heard of certain people successfully growing window plants, so maybe it is worth a try. i am collecting used aquariums for terrarium use as well, and trying to make space in my basement for some grow lights. anyway, i just thought i would introduce myself before i started posting random questions and comments here. hello! danielle

Hi and welcome Daniello ! Becareful of what you wish we all started the same way. Now we've got no room (nor time) for anything else. Have fun. You're going to enjoy the crazy Canuck CP'ers on this board.

It might not take too much mulch to overwinter VFTs and others here in Canada, I'm getting some neat data from some experiments we've been doing. More later.

Welcome to the board... you're at the start of a long and enjoyable road to addiction, but I can think of worse things to be addicted to!
Brian is right... I was a participant in his experiment and what came back was quite interesting... keep an eye out for his results and prepare to start digging!

Welcome. Too bad you didn't join before last weekend. I drove to Sask to pick up a gun I could have dropped you off some good stuff. Stephen

You should have no troubles finding some specimens to experiment with- most of the "easy/beginner" plants reproduce like MAD so start-up material is easy to come by, and seeds ship real well in plain old envelopes. All you'll really need is a big bag of peat moss, a bag of "proper" CP-growin sand and some pots and trays, once you have that and a source for water (your tap water might be okay but I am not sure) you're pretty much good to go- anything more "exotic" can be acquired as needed, but seriously if you have that list together, you're set

I looked up Saskatoon drinking water chemistry on the net. Its way too hard for the plants, use distilled, RO or rain water instead.

thank you for all the welcomes! brian -- you've piqued my interest about the experiments, i hope you post about them soon! as for saskatoon's drinking water, i am well aware that it is unsuitable for cps and will be setting up a nice big rain barrel beside my house stephen -- aww, that's too bad! oh well, maybe next time... mabudon -- yeah, i'm pretty excited about it; i've already got a big bag of peat and a small aquarium, lots of pots and trays (i'm already a plant/gardening fanatic, haha), and am sourcing out the best places to get suitable sand and maybe some lights. my mom just ordered a bunch of (dead) sphagnum for her orchids, and she's found that once reconstituted, live moss tends to pop up from the spores, so i should have some of that soon too. yay!
