I received some beautifully packaged pings from from WillyCKH last week. They looked a little worn out from the long trip across the country, and it didn't help that Canada Post took their sweet time (9 days!). I got them planted in a peat/perlite mix right away and sat them in a tray with half an inch of distilled water, though I've since poured out the water after reading that mexican pings are prone to root rot. I've been poking the dirt every day to make sure it's still damp. They are now on a NE windowsill with just a couple hours of direct sun in the early morning, and a small desk lamp with a 100W equivalent, 6500K CFL 6 inches above on around 6-8hrs a day. I had them under a humidity dome for the first couple of days but I've since removed them because it's been super humid inside the past few days, around 70% or more. It's now 6 days from when I first planted them and they look like they are still on the decline. Another leaf from each of them has wilted away, the new leaves on the Kondoi seem to have browning tips. Here they are on day one, immediately after planting: And new photos from today: Is there anything I can do to help them along? More light? More water?

I've not had luck with pings in anything other than long fibre sphagnum. but i'll wait for Willy to chime in

Base on my experiences, Pings aren't picky about the soil media as long as I have enough light for them. The growth centers look okay, it's normal to see stressed pings to wilt a few outer leaves as they conserve the energy stored in those leaves to recover. Keep us posted! Good luck! Willy

Thanks Willy! I was worried that having the light on longer or giving them more sun would dry them out. Should I try putting them outside a little bit every day? Should I keep some water in their tray or just continue to dampen the media as needed?

avoid sunlight, I think your CFL and watering is fine. I know how it feels. When I got my first pings, I was so worried, and some of them didn't make it probably because I was 'too caring'... Give them some time, they should start growing for you soon enough

Thanks for the assurances Willy. You are right, I think they are recovering. Here are some updated pictures from tonight. All the center leaves seem to be growing. Is it weird that they all seem to be leaning over to one side rather than growing outwards in opposite directions? Moranensis x ehlersiae Emarginata Kondoi I can't seem to get a good picture of the Kondoi, there's too much glare and it's teeny tiny.

Are they growing toward the light? Glad to know they are recovering!

Are they growing toward the light? Glad to know they are recovering! Weirdly, no. They are all going in different directions. The artificial lighting is directly above, and the plants are growing sideways. None of them are pointing towards the sun, either, except maybe p. emarginata in the top left corner. Seems more of a coincidence though.
