Okay, here's my information on graowing a ceph.....medium is one part perlite, one part peat, one part 16 grit sand. Problem- I need to find more 16grit sand as my local source dried up. They now have glass bits as replacement for the sand (as the sand and glass are actually for sandblasting) but the soil is different with glass instead of sand. So use sand. That being said I have a ceph in 100% live sphagnum and it's doing fine.
Humidity....keep them covered with a piece of plastic to keep humidity up. I get a bit of mold but not much and benefit outweighs the negative...(see photo showing the humidity below).
Watering....Ideally top wate only and do it kinda slowly. I think more cephs die of too much water versus too little. Once water starts to come out the holes in the bottom, stop watering. Wait several days (say two) before watering again. This allows air to be in medium and its not too wet. Does this mean I don't tray water...no, I do that too. But not too deep and let it dry out before I water again. Best option...top water till comes out bottom, then water again in a few days.
Lighting- I keep them a few inches under T12 lights...GE Plant and Aquirium bulbs...seems T12 becoming obsolete so the last two lights I bought were T8's one fixture having two GE Daylight 32 bulbs (a few cephs are under these bulbs) and the other fixture has the much more expensive Gro-Lux Octron bulbs - have two cephs under those lights and they are quite red.
This ceph is grown under the Gro-Lux bulb...
I also fertilize once in a while (say once per month during the spring and summer) using a diluted/weak orchid mix.....putting the water in the pitchers.
\Here are the parent plants I have showing the plastic.
Here are two cephs without plastic on them....so it's not fatal if they don't have plastic covering them to increase humidity. These two are under the Daylight 32 bulbs.
If you want my thought on any problem you have let me know and I'll post and assist as best I can.
