May be some helpful info on pollen collection , collection or pollen and its storage is very important to getting good pollination and viable seed from you nep flowers. a few things you will need.
As your flower spike grows up and the flowers start to open up, you will notice that the yellow or some times red area sitting on the filament known as the anther, that holds the pollen, the pollen will ripen and make a yellow fluff ball , has a short life then slowly De-grades and the flower dies off. "" important , keep flower dry when pollen collecting, wet flowers will not get good pollen and it will go off or mold up in packet if wet or damp collected ""
the collection time is when the pollen is ripe ,your visual appearance of the pollen will tell you when its ripe to harvest . you can see the pollen looking slightly extended out and fully looking in this photo
this is some flowers that are open but not rip yet ,you should be able to see the difference from not ripe to ripe pollen in the 2 photos
Collection of Pollen, finding the ripe pollen flower, using tweezers, pick off the flower at the filament and take off from the flower spike, carefully as the ripe pollen will start to fall off if your to rough , do 1 at a time only, important, place the ripe pollen flower over the per per-perpared packet made from baking paper, wax side out !! and brush off pollen on the the baking paper ,and repeat till all ripe flowers are gone, ,they will open in lost of 5 to 8 flowers at a time over the period of the spiks life span what ever that will be.all are different .
now fold up your packet carefully and put name of pollen on packet with the pencil , and put in air tight container in fridge ,or once all pollen has been collected , it can be frozen as well .
as the flowers get older they will degrade and look like this over a week or so
now your ready to pollinate a female flower
a unopened nep female flower
A female flower that has been pollinated not the petal's are bow facing downward
the receptors on the female flower and the petals are looking very dew-ie or have dew on the when ripe and to except the pollen ,and have a particular smell to them ,attracting the pollinators ,same with the male Flowers ,smells a bit like a mouse tank !!. you will know it when you smell it .
A pollinated pod in a lot of hybrids will look like this when pollination has been successful many H/L pods and specie pods and not so elongated
unsuccessful pollination may look like this ,or flower that are let go and or no pollination was done .
OK hard to get it all in , but a bit of practice you will get some good pollination's ,,hope this helps a bit and you have good pollination success
