...I just picked up 4 X 50 lbs of #3 silica sand today (spring is coming!). It's coarse, average about 1/8 to 3/16, it's good, I've been using it all year. Easy to clean, just under $10 a bag. The place is in Hamilton, right by the docks, security has to let you in, seriously! Bell & Mackenzie, all you Toronto guys, it may be worth the drive to Hamilton. To ship this would be out of the question. Cheers.

I've had some dieback in some dews. I was wondering if it was unwashed silica sand? Not sure as some dews with the same medium are doing very well.
Anyway I washed the silica sand grit 12 (I seem to remember) that Greg got (Canuck1). I used tap water until the effluent lost the silty look and was fairly clear-the TDS of the effluent was ~ 70. Then I washed with distilled water and the TDS was around 30-pretty safe I think.

...it is silica sand but it is not washed. I got some of the 12ST grit as well, both have to be washed. They have all kinds of different sands. This is how I've been doing it. First I sift it to get all the super fine stuff out, then I wash in a really fine curtain material (Fabricland) under tap water and then I dry it over a fan. It actually doesn't take that long it's just that I've been doing mass quantities of it. Lloyd, if you're planning on coming out here to get some, let me know, I can tell you exactly how to get there. It's kind of tricky, I couldn't find it my first time.

I forgot to say that I washed it with vinegar after the last tap water rinse-no bubbling or hissing so I think it was pure silica. I actually have a lot of sand right now. Thanks for your offer. I use it mainly for succulents and plants that need a well drained, low fertility soil.
