Greetings, I had nothing to do this morning, so I threw a little program together to help me to keep track of my plants (CP and otherwise). For each plant, I can keep standard information such as plant name, common name, category, where it was obtained and when and current location, and location of origin. Additionally, you can keep descriptive information and cultivation instructions for each plant, as well as a photo log / journal allowing multiple entries for each plant, so you could, perhaps, track its growth over time in a nice and organized manner. I think it's turned out pretty good for a first version (I'm probably biased) and I thought I'd make it available as a freebie for members of this board. If you are interested in trying the program out, click on the link below to run the setup program: www.swconnection.com/PlantTrakker/Setup.EXEIf you get any warnings when running it, simply instruct Windows to continue anyway... it's clean. If you have any questions or comments, you can PM me here. Enjoy. >>> Rick <<<

Oh, one small piece of advice.
If you do use the photo log extensively (as I plan to), make a copy of the photos you intend to save in the database, resize them to something reasonable like 800 x 600 and reduce the colours to 16-bit if possible.
The reason for this is that the control converts a jpeg into a straight bitmap before storing it in the database, and even though it is compressed in the database somewhat, it doesn't match the compression in a jpeg.
This will simply prevent your database from growing too large too fast.

Sounds like a great idea. Plus very generous of you to make it freeware. I've tried to keep track of who I get which plants from but I usually lose track.

"Exception EBDISAMEngineError in module PlantTrakker.exe at 0017194E. DBISAM Engine Error #11010 Table or Backup file "Plants" does not exist." This is the exception that windows throws up when I tried to run it after it installed. I did a bit of windows C++ and this seems like your windows set-up includes a dll or some other dependency that our systems don't.

The program doesn't have any dependencies other than the presence of the executable file. If it doesn't find the necessary data files, it creates new, empty ones. I just deleted my data files again and tried the program and got the same message (i.e. it didn't work), however, when I recompiled the program and tried it, everything worked properly... I was successful on several different computers, including one that never "saw" anything of mine before. Go figure!!! I've uploaded the new version to my site, so if everyone who has tried unsuccessfully could give it another shot and let me know how it works out, I'd appreciate it very much. Again, the URL is: www.swconnection.com/PlantTrakker/Setup.EXEYou can just install it right over top of the existing copy if it is still on your system. >>> Rick <<<

It starts up and seems fine. I haven't experimented with it but everything seems Ok. Thanks. Is there a capability of naming your own data files so you could just email the files to someone with the program and they could have access to your whole collection database?

Right now, the filenames are hardwired, but that idea makes sense and isn't hard to implement at all.
