Question for our tropical fish enthusiasts I was wondering if any one knew if this is some sort of algae and how I should get rid of it? I had a little bit of a long hair like algae problem a year back and got a couple of Rose barbs and a flying fox (might not be 100 accurate on those names ) they cleaned that right up. As for this stuff its really slow growing but no one eats it. Its the black fan like thing as seen growing on the rock in front of the shrimp.

I've never seen that. Could it be a freshwater sponge?

Looks to me like Black Beard Algae. Very hard to get rid of - and you're right - nothing will eat it.

You could try the "bleach method" Give whatever the Black Beard Algae is on about a 3 minute bath of 1:19 bleach:water. Make sure you rinse it off REALLY well afterwards. If it's successful, you should see it slough off over the next few days.

Bleach would do it but chlorine is really toxic to fish and bleach is stabilized in alkaline solution, which tends to stick to surfaces and is hard to rinse off. I would use hot water then rinse with vinegar (or better yet a little orange or lemon juice that is both acidic and reducing) then a final hot water rinse.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I removed the two most contaminated rocks and baked them in the oven. I also boiled the filter nozzle that had it growing on it.
Lastly I got a bunch more algae eating shrimp and snails which supposedly feed on it.
