Good info, thanks both of you. Your tap water is 20ppm? Crikey, in the winter my cold water is around 150ppm, tested the hot water for the first time last night and it settled at 193ppm.

And yet another reason to move out there... So that's why Whistler water tastes so good straight out the tap!

The better "TDS" (conductivity) meters have temperature compensation (like my $3 Home Depot one). Probably the hot water has the same TDS as the cold water. If you're curious, try measuring when it cools down.

If you're curious, try measuring when it cools down. Been a long time since 1st year chem lab - thanks for the remind! FWIW, the water was probably not hot as I didn't run it. The best would be to take equal volumes from each tap at the same time in the same type of vessel, put both in the same spot until temperature equilibrates then take the readings. I've noticed distilled water will increase over time (probably as CO2 and other gasses dissolve into solution).

Neat, lol. I wonder what a mini-bog with some Panellus stipticus would look like.

Wow, you are a master grower. Would you mind giving a sprout, me, a brief tutorial on how you grow your flytraps. I would like to look in a pot and behold greatness too. Also, I thought flytraps needed a cold winter treatment. How do you do this with your light growing method.
That Victoria water makes growing things easier. I am on a well with higher ph and higher tds in Nanaimo. You must grow orchids as well?

My plants normally experience a short outdoor dormancy from mid October to mid December and resume growing in January. Contrary to a lot of people are saying, healthy flytraps need neither lengthy nor cold dormancy. 8 weeks are often sufficient. During dormancy keep the soil a bit on the dry side and no feeding. I also suspect that flytraps don't need dormancy at all if certain conditions are met... though I would withhold my opinions for now until the plants that I have been experimenting with get through their third year without dormancy.
