My experience so far has been that soft pencil is the best for marking white plastic plant tags. No marker will last under lights or the sun. And tags have to be replaced every few years because they go brittle under UV light. Has anyone had success with a printed label system? How do those adhesive label printers work out? I'm thinking printed vinyl labels on aluminum tags may be the way to go. You can buy thin aluminum sheeting at Home Depot.

I have good result with pencil and rude plastic tag too. All my effort with Sharpie or shiny plastic faded away rapidly. I also tested paper tag sealed in a plastic film but I didn't do it right. The paper is not tightly sealed so water come in by capillarity and erase the information.

I've seen printed labels used on trays for seeding (288 cell trays) but after we transplant we've always used pencil on plastic tags. I've seen plastic tags printed on before at commercial growers but I've never seen adhesive label on tags. I think you should be able to get sheets of perforated plastic tags that you can use with your printer. I can ask for you if you're interested in those.

The perforated plastic printable tags sound interesting. If you know of a source, let me know. Do you know if they stand up to UV? I've got a few orchids with what appear to be printable perforated tags and they've never faded.

Over here the professional growers tend to use a 'brother' printer and waterproof self adhesive tape to put on labels, some of which I have had on plants for several years in direct sun outside with no text fading or loss of adhesion, bar one that I damaged in my usual clumsy way. The label itself tends to go brittle and snap (which is annoying) before any loss of text is observable. It really is good, which I believe is reflected in the price of the kit.
Cheers Steve

Hal, those tags that came with the orchid I gave you are awesome. I have a role of 2000 from when I still lived in Ontario, but I'm starting to run low. I'll have to look up who makes them, they don't break but can still bend and there is lots of room to write on. I use pencil for everything.

I received the samples and they are not exactly what I'd hoped. The wide markers are large (1" wide) and would need to be glued to a traditional label. The wrap labels would be better if you're going that route but are not otherwise useful for CPs.
I have 4 sheets of the 1" by 8" pot labels and 3 sheets of the wraps. PM me with your address and which sheet you'd like to try if you're still interested and I'll send it to you.
Thermal transfer (label) printer is still looking the best for this but I don't believe they can be used for anything else.
