Hi guys, I wanted to get some opinions here. I was talking to Jay earlier about this...but what kind of peat moss do you guys use? I used to have "Forest" brand peat moss and it worked perfect so far. I guess the leftover 1cuft bag got used with outside potting, so i was looking for more bags. I found a primier brand of peat moss. I already planted my cephs in it..and also put some live LFS in there. I am noticing the LFS isn't doing too well. I don't know if this is due to the peat... The possibilities can include: 1) Wrong pH 2) Other nutrients/contamination of peat with soil 3) not "true" peat moss unlike what the bag says. Another issue might be I just need to wait longer and see how the ceph does. here is a pic of the bag I am using a 1cubic foot bag. any opinions or feedback would be awesome. Would be nice to breakdown the brands that are good for CPs. cheers, Varun

I buy mine in 3 cu ft bags at Home Depot or the garden center. Premier, Fafard, Lambert, I've never noticed a difference or had problems with them.

Just buy Canadian and look for the sustainable logo.

I agree with Lloyd and Hal, I always get the biggest bails, I use multiply ones every time I repot so it's less to carry

I've only ever bought premier and I've noticed that when I don't wash it, the indoor 'dews would get black at the growth point and sometimes die. I think it is called humic acid build up. I've heard good things about black gold peatmoss but have never seen it for sale.

Thanks for the reply guys. I know premier is canadian peat moss. But no where on the bag does it say 100% peat moss. So I guess they can get away by "diluting" the peat with soil or mud?
Thanks Devon. That really helps. I'll keep a watch on the cephs. Hopefully they won't go downhill. I guess it changes from plant to plant...some have higher tolerances than others. I will be looking for my old forest brand moss in the coming season..but until then..I have to make due with this.

I only ever used the 3 cubic foot bales of premiere peat moss I got for 5.97 a bale from wal-mart. no probems with is but it will grow harmless moss, might even look nice around plants, that's what I am hoping for I rinse it first though to be safe and instead of Perlite I could not get any and used insed Aquarium rocks so far the combo works for me fine!

I think I see growth of the Drosera Natalensis seeds! I looked at a patch of green moss and seem a light green growth only a mm long....cannot see it without magnifying glass though this is a lighter green than the moss think a seed sprouted for me?

Hi guys, ... any opinions or feedback would be awesome. Would be nice to breakdown the brands that are good for CPs. cheers, Varun G'day. Picked up a bag of this at Walmart a few days ago. I'm rinsing a batch and the first rinse water came out at 35 on the TDS meter so it seems free of fertilizer.

Any pics can help. In my experience...there are more than the required hitchhiking mosses and grasses in peat moss.

I'll just have to wait and see if it can still grow live LFS. I do miss the nice peaty smell from the "Forest brand" peat moss that I used to have.

Thanks cook. Gives me a bit of peace to know that others have successfully used it.

I will be looking for my old forest brand moss in the coming season..but until then..I have to make due with this. When I started with CP's I bought Premiere Peat moss bale and planted my CP's in it using a tray to water them I had 2 typicals that produced 7 leaves on 1 plant and 8 on the other( I foolishly put them in our unheated shed,we got a cold snap that froze the and the media solid killing all VFT's) My Big Jaws grew from 3 leaves to 7! I put a D Capensis in a 2 liter ice cream pail and put it in the greenhouse and it was showing new growth every week, unfortunatly my mother put plants in there to that got sick and must have got to the Sundew, contaminated the peat and killed the plant b4 I got to it, but Premier Peat moss is ok as long as you wash it first. I got Drosera Natalensis seeds growing in peat from the same bale and they were there 3 weeks ,out of 10 seeds 7 are now sprouted and growing ! There is a guy here with a peat moss farm nearby.I won't even buy peat from him !!
