I usually wash sand and peat for indoor plants only, for outdoor stuff it gets washed naturally by the rain. I have never washed sphagnum before either, though. I've read that it helps prevent slime mold from growing though.

Smart move Maiden, my friend ha MS and is allowed to grow and use weed for the days he is in pain so he has all the Hydroponic gear
I paid 5.97 for a bale of peat,he buys the best cause in his words he is not using cheap peat in his gear so he orders his sometimes 4 times as much as me but the MS Society reimburses him his costs when he sends in a receipt to them and they send him a cheque!

Good point, Lloyd. I personally never wash any media except sand. And I'll use tap water on my CPs in a pinch. I dunno what a TDS would read here in NL but my Flytraps did really well with it(Tap Water),not as good as with pure water but they did no die off but grew !

I wouldn't recommend tap water all the time for VFTs. I think you'll find that the literature says it will kill the plants with long term use. I'd use rain water or distilled.

I do use proper water now and have been for a while,I used tap water thinking left out all night was ok, the VFTs grew, but when I used proper water the difference was like night and day!,they even got to a brighter green for me Can't say the flies thought they looked better lol.

I used tap water from the hose on my Sarracenia and flytraps a lot last year when I didn't have RO water, and when it rained I assume it washed away any unwanted minerals or chlorine because they seemed okay. I think it effected how colourful they were though. But like Hal said, I wouldn't use tap water all of the time.

Toronto tap water will not touch my CP's! I even feel guilty watering my succulents with it.

I wouldn't bother testing LFS with a TDS meter, unless it's a weird brand that might have fertilizer in it (never have seen any). At an orchid society meeting recently I was told that LFS can run as high as 150ppm when rinsed with hot RO water. They recommend rinsing all media before planting orchids. I can verify this observation. A good soak in a large volume of clean water will bring the reading down well below 100.

I have an N. ventricosa - one of my first CP's from Home Depot - that's been living on tap water and neglect for 5 years now. But I have been considering RO systems recently. The summer rain water from my barrel comes with mosquito larvae and algae and maybe a touch of giardia and then there's the 15-20 weeks when it's frozen.

So, I just receive a 3 kg brick from justmosscanada. Here's what it looks like : LFS 3kg brick par Shoggoths, sur Flickr Here's a comparison between justmoss (right) and the Fafard brand (left) I can find at the horticulture shop here Fafard vs justmosscanada LFS par Shoggoths, sur Flickr There's some nice bud in there, I'm pretty sure it will come back to life. The price = 3, 06$ per 100g. So it is a really good price in my opinion. There was a acetic acid like smell when I opened the brick so I'll probably let the LFS sit in water a bit much more that what I usually do. Let me know if you need some contact information.

But it does look very good quality. Martin, they don't advertise the 3kg brick on their web site. I'm guessing it costs about $90?

The 3kg brick was on wholesale when I asked. It was at 73$ + 20$ fret so perhaps still at the same price or a bit higher.
