I want to buy a Ping this spring but I live in Newfoundland and it has to be grown indoors cause winters here would be too cold and kill it. Can someone list some pings that I would have success growing here in these conditions.

Most of the Mexican pings will grow just fine indoors with good light. I suggest any of the varieties of P. moranensis for a beginner, or a hybrid like 'Aphrodite'.

So as long as I can supply light foe it I can grow a Mexican ping? Here is the one I want
Pinguicula moranensis Origin: Mexico. Description: This larger species produces oval/oblong sticky leaves and dark pink flowers. Hardiness: Zone 10. Experiences cool dry winters (10 - 15 Celsius) in its native environment. Price: $8.00

[I've merged the 2 similar threads here.]
Yes, the P. moranensis you've listed is a good ping for a beginner. I grow mine under T8 fluorescent bulbs.

Hi Cook - You could go a completely different route and embrace your climate by getting a P. vulgaris That one could just be kept outside. It lives in the arctic and can freeze solid in the winter. So if you have a sunny spot outside you should be okay, as long as you don't live close enough to the coast where you get salt spray (though, I've seen this species growing in Iceland on the beach, so who knows).

I have a small herd of Mexican pings, all are fairly easy to grow under lights in a terrarium. Try P. moranensis, P moctezumae, P. gigantea, P. lutea, P. debbertina, P. gypsicola, P. pirouette, P. cyclosetta, all bloom, usually purple but some in pink or white. Have you tried Pay Pal?

I think I am gonna go with P moraensis for my first Ping Never been a fan of paying unless its COD or Money orders I tried paypal and am not really a fan of it. Besides for 8.00 $ I really won't miss it if I loose it which I hear is hard lol !!!

There are many on this site willing to sell you plants, reliable people, healthy plants, people who are alright with you paying them with a postal money order, and since folks here can be generous, will often throw in freebie bonus plants. Try Shoggoths, H20, 31drew31 or bonfield. My bonuses included things like N. Ampulara and H. minor. Service is quick so plants are healthy when they arrive. You might have to wait until spring before you send them money as time is here when there is a risk of things freezing when they are shipped.

Moranensis is a good choice. Nice medium sized plant with a well-defined rosette. It was one of my two most prolific bloomers - 3 spikes and had 2 flowers going at times. Cyclosecta is another prolific bloomer but it is smaller than Moranensis. FWIW, I have the 'Alba' variety'. I found all of them to be easy growers, didn't lose any! I'd also recommend sourcing from one of our members first and then if you have no luck try one of the standard sources. All of the members CanadaOne mentioned are top shelf and everyone I've dealt with so far from this group has been top shelf. Good luck!

Cook, I think P moraensis is a great choice. I did however notice you mentioned it only being $8, I just wanted to inform you that HB has a minimum order of $25 (plus shipping). I don't have any Moraensis but, if you would like, I can send a couple of P.Aphrodite's to you for the cost of shipping only. This is the first ping grew and I find it VERY forgiving. If you would like, remind me when the weather gets warmer, and I will be more than happy to send you some for just shipping. Hope you have a great weekend! Mr. Lane

I ordered from HB I ordered 3 flytraps and got a sundew that died due to something in the soil that I threw out. I am interested in Pings I live in NL so I can send you a SASE to ship them to me in february because for the past few years we had a early spring that came on fast 3 weeks all our snow was gone!are thesse suitable for indoor plants as our winters get to cold to plant them outside but do have accss to a small greenhouse in the summer. Just let me know when you wanna send them(before spring is fine since they will get full sunlight in a second story window or on rainy days my flytraps went under LED lights I did this with a 3 stem Big Jaws and got 6 traps before dormancy. thankk you for the offer I really appreciate it Let me know whatever you decide.

Now all peat I have gets washed in distilled water before it even reaches the pot so I make sure there is nothing in my peat mix when I plant.

If it is easier you can put these plants in a baggie and pack them in a small box and send them C.O.D.if that is easier for you send me a email at dennis20101973@live.ca and I will give you my mailing address that way there is no risk of sending a envelope which can be folded and might harm the plants.
