From the front this mexi-ping has a fairly typical P. moranensis look to it, but from the side view, a purple colored nectar spur is revealed, that could be as enticing to a hummingbird on a searingly hot summer's scorcher, as a grape popsicle would be to us. And this seed grown P. moranensis from the Huixteco locale of Mexico is the owner of the flower above. dvg

Thanks guys,
Drew, I can't recall seeing a purple spur before either, all of my mexi-pings that are flowering have green spurs.

I took a look today while packing plants up to move and cyclosecta seems to have a purple spur too. I have a few in flower so I'll try and take a decent picture once my tent is set back up and plants are in.

Really nice veined rosette there DVG ! I also have a purple spur on my P. sumidero I x laueana hybrid. Luckily, I took a picture of it. I just started taking pics of those lastly for identification. P1070444 par Shoggoths, sur Flickr I don't know if it came from the laueana or sumidero part ...

Nice Martin, I have sumidero 1 in flower and it's white so must be from laueana. Going to try and attach photos from my phone. One of sumidero and one cyclosecta. The cyclosecta spur is a little darker in person. Attachments:

Looks like at least some laueana have coloured spurs. This is an image from BCP.

Haha, looks like y'all have been looking closely at those spurs in your collections. Nice to see the pics you've posted with the colored up spurs matching the petals. dvg

I have a P. moctezumae x gypsicola which has just bloomed with a crimson flower and a long, thin, deep crimson spur.

Nice plant Hal !!!
The white ring is the amount of water you give it ?
Like Drew said earlier, my sumidero is in flower and the stalk is green so the purple color must come from the laueana.

I keep the pots in a special tray from Lee Valley and the white ring is where the pot fits into the round insert in the tray. My pings get maybe a half inch of water, then I let them dry out for a few days. Dormant pings get water maybe once a month and a misting every now and then.
I'll post more photos of the flowers later and start some leaf pullings soon. I really like the form and leaves on this ping.
