Just curious: how many fluorescent lights are you using (Watts/ linear ft or shelf), info on minimal quantities is most interesting, for which groups of CPs, especially for seeds germination? I, it seems, am catched in vicious cycle of obtaining more and more lights with search new arrival or rearrangement; but wish to be reasonable. What is necessary and sufficient? I'm trying to grow Droseras (pygmy - Austr., S.Afr. and S.Amer. compact rosettes), Sarracenia seedlings, Nepenthes sprouts (highland and lowland mixed) and 1 adult Nep from Wal-Mart (no problems here, windowsill plus prolonged light day is OK).

The only artificial lighting I use is on my stand. it's 3 tiers and has 2 4' tubes for each level. they are 40 watt gro lights. I grow various drosera, sarracenia seedlings, venus fly traps, nepenthes (both adult and seedlings), and the odd ping. It works well enough for me, I do know that if there was a bit stronger light, I could probably have stronger colour, but this works good enough. I preferred growing my plants on the stand in the living room, which is east facing and gets lots of light till about noon. Also the south facing bay window in the kitchen was very good too. However not everyone in my house shares my love of plants. Both window locations were good enough to allow my plants to colour up and got no additional lighting. Sib

I have under 50 watts of compact fluoros in desk-lamps plus my windowsills, I grow mostly Drosera but some Sarr seedlings and some neps on the windowsills
I plan on getting more, but want to plan it out perfectly rather than get stuff I'll need to replace after a few months as things change I got away with a single 23 watt compact fluoro for almost a year and had maybe 12-15 species at that time

Good! I also grew Sarr seedlings last winter mostly near window, with few additional hours under shoplight. This winter tried to place them close to their personal fluorescent light - they liked it; but it is good to know that this is more luxury than neccesity.

I grow my neps with my orchids under three 400-watt metal halides. I get really nice colouration. You have to watch the neps when they vine, as they tend to climb toward the hot bulb.

rhillier: are they in an enclosed container/terrarium? If not, what %RH do you get with 3 x 400W?
